What are the warning signs that you may need root canal treatment? Is a root canal really necessary? What happens if you don’t get a root canal when you need one? These are all questions our Plymouth, MI, dentists Dr. James Johnson and Dr. Flora Trang hear often. In order to protect and preserve your oral health here’s what you should know about getting root canal therapy.
What is root canal therapy?
This endodontic procedure goes inside the tooth to remove an infected dental pulp and to clean out any bacteria that is present to preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible. A root canal is designed to save a tooth by stopping the source of the infection and preventing it from spreading. A root canal is preferable to having the tooth pulled, as treatment is quicker and far less invasive. If one of our Plymouth, MI, family dentists has told you that you need a root canal it’s important that you don’t put off treatment.
What are the signs of root canal therapy?
While not all people will experience symptoms it’s important that you come in for a dental checkup if you notice:
- A toothache that gets worse when biting, chewing, or putting pressure on the tooth
- Lingering sensitivity to extreme temperatures or sugar
- Swollen, tender gums around the affected tooth
- A pimple on the gums
- A cracked or fractured tooth
- Darkening or discoloration of a tooth
It’s important that you seek treatment right away, as many of these issues are considered dental emergencies.
What should I expect from root canal treatment?
Contrary to what you may have heard, root canal therapy is really no more invasive than getting a tooth filled after a cavity. We will numb the area beforehand with local anesthesia. Once the area is numb we will make a hole in the hard outer layer of the tooth so that we can reach the inside of the tooth.
Once inside, we will disinfect the tooth and carefully remove the infected or inflamed dental pulp (the source of your toothache). Some people experience immediate relief after the infected pulp has been removed. After the tooth has been disinfected, we will seal up the root canals and inside of the tooth with a special material. We will also need to take impressions of the tooth so that we can create a dental crown that will fit precisely over the tooth to protect it.
